The FileZilla Server Web Interface Is Here

Posted in Blog

Manage your files from any browser and integrate through a REST API over HTTPS.

Many of you have asked for it, and we have listened. The beta of FileZilla Server (FZS) and FileZilla Pro Enterprise Server (FZPES) now includes a web interface: a browser-based Web Client and a REST API, both served over HTTPS.

What’s in the beta

  • Web Client. Browse and manage files on your server from any modern browser, with no extra software on the client side.
  • REST API over HTTPS. Integrate the server with your own tools, scripts and workflows.
  • Public site. Publish a public site from an index.json or index.md file, or start from the bundled example site.
  • Granular control. Protocol policies can be set system-wide, per group, or per user, so you decide exactly who can use the web interface and for what.
  • Modern security defaults. TLS 1.3, short-lived access tokens and refresh tokens that stay valid for a limited period.

Getting the beta

The beta can be downloaded here: https://download.filezillapro.com?beta=1

Want to be notified about this beta and future ones? Open the Updates panel and set it to check for Stable and beta versions. From then on, new beta builds are offered alongside stable releases, so you will see them as soon as they are available.

Need a temporary registration key to test the beta in a test environment? Write to info@filezillapro.com and we will provide one.

Disabled by default, on purpose

The web interface is a new way into your server, so we made a deliberate choice: Web Client & API authentication and Web Client file sharing are disabled by default. Nothing is exposed until you enable it.

To turn it on, open the System protocol policies settings and enable the policies you need. You can then refine access per group or per user. We recommend enabling it only for the users and groups that need it, and only after you have reviewed your TLS and certificate configuration.

Security first: an independent penetration test

The same care that led us to disable the web interface by default drives our next step. Before general availability, we are engaging an independent security firm to run a penetration test against the server and its new web interface.

We want FileZilla Server and FileZilla Pro Enterprise Server to be solid tools, and that means having our work checked by people whose job is to find what we missed. We will share the outcome and the fixes that follow.

Try the beta and help us improve it

Please test the beta in a non-production environment first. We’d really appreciate it if you could report any issues directly to info@filezillapro.com. Thank you for helping us improve the FileZilla Server!
